The environmental review process for the Century Plaza has begun, which will evaluate the development project that threatens the Century Plaza and ultimately determine the hotel’s fate.

In June 2009, the City of Los Angeles Planning Department issued a Notice of Preparation for the environmental impact report (EIR) for the project that threatens the Century Plaza.

In this first phase of the process, the public had the chance learn about the proposed replacement project at a public scoping meeting in July. Until August 13, the Planning Department accepted public comments on the project's potential environmental impacts and alternatives that should be considered in the EIR.

In December 2008, t he owners of the Century Plaza Hotel (Minoru Yamasaki, 1966) in Century City announced plans to raze the building and replace it with two 600-foot towers.

The new project would include a boutique hotel, condominiums, and mixed-use space, plus two acres of open space. The venerable hotel received a $36 million facelift less than a year ago.

In April 2009, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Century Plaza Hotel to its 2009 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. This annual list highlights historic places throughout the U.S. that face destruction or irreparable damage. Learn More at 11 Most Endangered Site

In July 2009, Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz filed a motion to nominate the hotel as a local Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. We'd like to thank the CD 5 councilmember for his leadership in submitting this important motion. Read the motion (PDF)
