DESIGN GUIDELINES The Historic Downtown is the heart of Los Angeles and the home of an unparalleled collection of early 20th Century commercial architecture. Block after block of stunning Beaux Arts, Art Deco, and revival-style buildings compose the district and bestow it an historic integrity unknown to most major metropolitan downtowns. Its elegant high-rise buildings produce an uncommonly urban character that compares to famously vibrant cities like New York. To highlight and promote these unique features of the Historic Downtown, the Los Angeles Conservancy, in partnership with the Downtown Center, Historic Core and Fashion District Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) prepared the Historic Downtown Los Angeles Design Guidelines. The Design Guidelines are a tool to enhance the physical and visual quality of the district and reinforce its historic and urban character, helping to expand business and investment activity and attract more shoppers, residents and visitors. These voluntary Guidelines describe how alterations and enhancements to buildings within the Historic Downtown can and should be designed so that they reinforce the area's historic environment. They provide professional, cost-effective and practical guidance about compatible storefront and signage design, repair and maintenance of older buildings, renovation that highlights historic features, and sensitive new construction. Prepared by San Francisco-based Architectural Resources Group, the Design Guidelines were funded by a grant from the Getty Grant Program's "Preserve LA."
