The Los Angeles Conservancy's 2008 Preservation Report Card “grades” the historic preservation policies of all eighty-nine jurisdictions of Los Angeles County.
We updated the report card (first issued in 2003) as part of the Conservancy’s thirtieth-anniversary activities, and as part of our ongoing efforts to promote and track preservation programs throughout L.A. County.
The cities of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Santa Monica, South Pasadena, West Hollywood, and Whittier garnered top honors, receiving “A” grades for their preservation programs.
Cities who have made the greatest improvements are Huntington Park, Los Angeles, West Covina, Calabasas, San Fernando, Manhattan Beach, Duarte, and Santa Clarita. Yet dozens of cities were cited as “preservation truants” for their utter lack of protections for historic resources.
Corrections
After posting the report card in December 2008, we learned of some mistakes and made the following corrections:
- Noted that Culver City does have a historic preservation commission
- Noted that Glendale does have a historic preservation officer
- Added missing text regarding La Canada Flintridge's listing of potential historic resources
- Corrected the dates of some buildings pictured in the text
- Corrected how we cited the size of Los Angeles County -- it's over 4,000 square miles, not 9.9 million! (It has over 9.9 million residents)
We apologize for the mistakes. If you notice any other errors, please contact Marcello Vavala at mvavala@laconservancy.org.
