CORNERSTONE EVENTS

In appreciation for their generous annual support, Cornerstone members are invited to celebrate L.A.’s architectural heritage in notable, private, and/or rarely seen historic architectural sites throughout the Los Angeles area.  Photographs from recent Cornerstone receptions are provided below.

Cornerstone Members Visit Newly Restored Schindler Residence

Many thanks to Conservancy members Michael La Fetra and Alison Letson for hosting a Cornerstone reception in May at a beautiful residence designed by Rudolf M. Schindler. Built in 1938 for Harry J. Wolff and his wife, this distinctively modern home is one of nine Schindler-designed homes built in the San Fernando Valley. Carefully restored by Michael and architect Jeff Fink, the home was recently designated a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

LRS Opening Night Harkens Back to Old Hollywood

Members at the Benefactor level joined with Cornerstone members and other special guests to launch the opening of the Conservancy’s nineteenth season of Last Remaining Seats.  Over 200 guests enjoyed appetizers, mojitos, and sangria provided by Ciudad restaurant with 1920s jazz performed by Art Deco and His Society Orchestra.  Dramatic purple toned Art Deco décor, created by Adam Martin and Classic Party Rentals, completed a festive party setting in the Orpheum Theatre’s new private lounge. Guests proceeded to the theater for the evening’s featured screening of Ninotchka.

Bullocks Wilshire

Inspired by new design ideas at the Paris Exposition, John Bullock along with partner P.G. Winnett created the bold Art Deco Bullocks Wilshire building in 1929 as a cathedral of commerce. Its soaring tower served as a beacon, and its large glass windows appealed to motorists passing by. The main entrance to the building is situated in the back, something completely unique at the time, to cater to the automobile. Bullocks Wilshire has been restored and adapted by Southwestern University School of Law.
