Developers are obtaining government approvals now for the right to begin projects as soon as the economy turns around -- many of which would threaten and destroy our historic resources.

As you probably know, the venerable Century Plaza Hotel is threatened with demolition and replacement by two 570-foot-tall towers.

The Capitol Records Building, the Hollywood Palladium, and CBS Columbia Square on Sunset Boulevard are all included in major high-rise development projects currently undergoing their entitlement process.

The Conservancy created its Preservation Advocacy Fund in 1996 in the wake of one of our most controversial, costly, and ultimately successful preservation battles: halting the demolition of the 1876 former Cathedral of St. Vibiana and preserving its landmark status.

Since then, the Preservation Advocacy Fund has become a crucial resource for those unexpected times when a preservation issue arises that requires expenses outside the Conservancy’s budget. Donations to the Advocacy Fund are above and beyond annual membership dues.

As you plan your year-end giving, please consider supporting the Conservancy’s advocacy efforts by making a special gift to the Preservation Advocacy Fund.

Your support of the Preservation Advocacy Fund will provide an extra gift – above and beyond your membership – to help us prevent a parade of bad projects that will demolish historic sites once the economy returns and developers are able to assemble financing to act on entitlements.

We know you may have more demands on less resources right now, and we greatly appreciate any amount you can contribute.

Thank you for your support!

Bullocks Wilshire/Southwestern Law School
3050 Wilshire Blvd., Wilshire Center

Inspired by new design ideas at the Paris Exposition, John Bullock and partner P.G. Winnett created the magnificent Art Deco Bullocks Wilshire building in 1929 as a "cathedral of commerce." Its soaring tower served as a beacon, and its large glass windows appealed to motorists passing by. The main entrance to the building is situated in the back, something completely unique at the time, to cater to the automobile. After the store closed in 1993, the building's fate hung in the balance until neighboring Southwestern University School of Law purchased it for its campus expansion. Southwestern spent ten years and $29 million to restore the building's historic elements while adapting it for state-of-the-art academic use. This world-renowned landmark enjoys new life as an inspirational learning environment and a prime example of adaptive reuse.
