A Visit to Old Los Angeles: Site sponsored by California State University, Long Beach. An interesting "virtual tour" of Los Angeles, circa 1900-1910, featuring a good collection of historic postcard images of downtown and other locales in the Los Angeles area.

Architecture of Los Angeles: Site sponsored by GreatBuildings.com. Descriptions and photos of iconic buildings.

Arroyo Seco Historic Parkway - Route 110: Page on National Scenic Byways Program website. Description of sites along the parkway as either a virtual tour or driving directions.

@LA Historical Sites: Site sponsored by @LA.com. Links to websites related to historic sites and buildings in greater Los Angeles area.

Downtown LA Life Magazine International: Site sponsored by Downtown Museum Association. On-line magazine of international art, culture, literature, and history.

Fascinating Buildings in Downtown Los Angeles: Site developed by Public Art in LA.com, describing select buildings in downtown Los Angeles including location, history, architecture, and works of art.

GenWeb Los Angeles: Site sponsored by The USGenWeb Project, offers links to resources for geneological research. See website for GenWeb sites for San Fernando Valley,and other counties or regions.

Googie Architecture Online: Site developed by Chip Jepsen to encourage preservation and appreciation of Googie and other Space-Age forms of architecture.

Historic Echo Park: Website for Echo Park Historical Society. Presents local preservation issues, informing membership as well as elected leaders and government agencies on pressing items and necessary action to protect and enhance Echo Park's cultural and historic heritage.

Historic House Museums of California: Site sponsored by Victorian Preservation Association. Directory of historic house museums throughout California.

Historic 101: Don Wilson's Highgway 101 Project for the preservation and memory of the original route of US Highway 101 from San Jose to Santa Barbara.

Historicproperties.com: Commercial site for historic real estate listings nationwide, from residential to commercial.

History of Lincoln Heights: "Lincoln Heights is more than the Selig Zoo, Carousel, Animal Farms, etc.... Fully documenting the history would be an educational gold mine for this community." - "javi," website designer.

Indians of California, Resources for Teachers and Students: Site sponsored by Harvey Mudd College; includes bibliography, maps and links to other sites, directories by region of the state.

Local Histories Website: Sponsored by the County of Los Angeles Public Library, the site provides answers to frequently asked community history questions for fifteen communities served by the County Library.

Los Angeles in the 1900's: Site by George Garrigues. A collection of contemporary articles, advertisements, and illustrations about Los Angeles at the start of the twentieth century.

Los Angeles Time Machines: Privately developed site; history of Los Angeles metropolitan historic restaurants and historic bars from the 1930s - 60s with a description of their history. "Using this guide you can still spend an entire week in California at restaurants, bars, movies, shopping etc., and in effect not leave the 1940s."

Los Angeles River: Past, Present, and Possibilities: Web exhibit developed by Alan Loomis, the site explores the history and potential futures of the Los Angeles River. By providing a public clearinghouse of information on the river, the exhibit aims to create an informed citizenry and expand the current discussion surrounding the future of the Los Angeles River.

Port of Los Angeles Virtual History Tour: Board of Harbor Commissioners site featuring photos and short essays on the role of the Port in Los Angeles history.

Space Age City: Chip Jepsen's celebration of the 1950s and 60s unique styles in architecture and other timely topics.

The Valley Observed: A website and blog devoted to San Fernando Valley history and lore, created by Kevin Roderick, author of The San Fernando Valley: America's Suburb.

You-Are-Here.com: Photo gallery of buildings throughout Los Angeles area, arranged by neighborhood and cross referenced by architects, construction decade, and styles.

Online Preservation Information

California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES): Information system developed by the California Natural Resources Agency to facilitate access to a variety of electronic data describing California's diverse environments. The goal is to improve environmental analysis and planning by integrating natural and cultural resource information from multiple contributors and by making it available and useful to a wide variety of users.

California Land Use Planning Information Network (LUPIN): Site sponsored by the State of California. Aggregate view of California's land use and environmental planning information including county general plans, environmental assessment documents, and relate information. LUPIN seeks to facilitate better informed decisions about land use, resource conservation, and ecosystem management, and enables Californians to identify and assess the cumulative environmental impact of planning decisions.

California Main Street Alliance: Primary nonprofit advocate for the principles and ideals of California Main Street, a program that strives to enhance the economic, social, cultural, and environmental well being of California’s historic and traditional downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.

Department of Neighborhood Empowerment: Online information resources related to citywide system of neighborhood councils within Los Angeles.

GIS-NET: Site sponsored by the County of Los Angeles Department of Regional Planning. Provides the public with geographic information regarding land use planning and zoning for the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

GSA Historic Preservation Website: U. S. General Services Administration site. The Center for Historic Buildings, under GSA’s Office of the Chief Architect, provides national leadership for compliance with the spirit and substance of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and other stewardship directives.

Interactive City Maps: Site sponsored by City of Los Angeles; displays information including location of public works, parks, police stations, real time traffic, as well as access to parcel-based zoning information and general plan land use designations.

National Council for Preservation Education: Site representing institutions across the U.S. with academic programs in historic preservation and allied fields.

National Park Service Cultural Resources: Programs, grants, registers, tax incentives, technical information available through the National Park Service.

National Register of Historic Places: Information about the federal government's historic preservation program, with a searchable database of properties listed in the National Register.

NEPANet: Site sponsored by the Federal Council on Environmental Quality with information on the National Environmental Policy Act and its implementation in assessment of environmental impacts of projects having Federal involvement.

Planetizen: A public-interest information exchange for the urban planning, design, development, and preservation communities, with news, commentary, book reviews, job postings, and training courses including PLAN-110: Introduction to Historic Preservation Planning.

Preservation Directory.com: A vast compilation of other online resources for preservation, restoration, heritage travel, historic real estate, and cultural resource management in the U.S. and Canada.

Preservation Online: The website for Preservation Magazine from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, containing excerpts from the magazine and more frequent news bulletins from around the nation.

PreserveLA: A forum and clearinghouse for news about preservation efforts and events in and around Los Angeles, with regular e-mail updates.

PreserveNet: Site sponsored by Cornell University; comprehensive database of regularly updated internet resources and current professional opportunities. Utilizes internet resources of various preservation organizations and maintains a current listing of professional and educational opportunities.

ZIMAS (Zoning Information and Map Access System): City of Los Angeles Department of City Planning site. Internet-based Geographic Information System (GIS) linking together digital maps and databases, to access and display information from large databases to many users quickly and efficiently.

Online Archives

American Memory Project: Library of Congress. Internet access to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, print, maps, and sheet music documenting the American experience.

California State Library: Online catalog for collections and resources within the California State Library, government publications and information resrouces, online resources.

County of Los Angeles Public Library: Local history for L.A. County libraries. These sites provide answers to frequently asked community history questions, and provide information on Native Americans, local missions, and the early history of the community as well as photographs and other documents, and links and citations to additional community history resources.

Los Angeles Public Library: A vast online resource with historic photographs, an index of California history topics, and comprehensive information about Los Angeles area history.

Online Archive of California: A vast source of historical materials from a range of California museums, historical societies, and archives, with over 120,000 images; 50,000 pages of documents, letters, and oral histories; and 8,000 guides to collections.

Oviatt Library Digital Collections: Sponsored by the Oviatt Library of Cal State University, Northridge, digital collections include the San Fernando Valley History Digital Collection, Latino Cultural Heritage Digital Collection, and other online collections.

UCLA Library Digital Collections: Thousands of images from the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News photographic archives, chronicling the history and growth of Los Angeles from the 1920s to 1990.

The USC Digital Library: Presents a wealth of historical photographs, oral histories and sound recordings, moving images, maps, documents, physical objects, and other materials owned by USC and collaborating institutions.

USC Los Angeles as Subject: An alliance of research archives, libraries, and collections dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Los Angeles region, hosted by the USC Libraries.
