The historic theatres of Los Angeles County are a rich cultural and architectural resource. For more than three decades, the Conservancy has worked to foster the preservation and use of these architectural gems.
Since 1987, our Last Remaining Seats series of classic films and live entertainment has demonstrated the value and viability of historic theatres. What began as a way to highlight neglected and underused theatres has become a summer tradition, drawing over 10,000 people each year from around the region, the nation, and the globe.
Since our founding, we have worked with property owners, elected officials, and other stakeholders to preserve and revitalize the treasures of downtown L.A.'s National Register Broadway Historic Theatre District. In 1999, we launched a targeted Broadway Initiative to take a more active role in the area's renewal.
Our volunteer Historic Theatres Committee (HTC) works to enhance public awareness and appreciation of historic theatres through events and educational outreach. Members also alert and advise Conservancy staff on theatre preservation issues. HTC meetings are temporarily on hiatus for 2013-2014.
