About the Film

Starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, this romantic comedy stands the test of time: it’s just as funny today as at the time of its release, inspiring a litany of parodies and adaptations.

Heiress Ellie Andrews (Colbert) has just eloped with aviator King Westley, and runs away from her family to reunite with him. After her purse is stolen on a Greyhound bus, leaving her with no money for the long journey, reporter Peter Warne (Gable) offers to help her in return for an exclusive story.

As the two travel across the country, classic screwball comedy capers ensue. Most notably, the iconic scene where Colbert displays her leg to passing drivers to hail a ride on the side of the road.

It Happened One Night made history when it won all five of the top Academy Awards for which it was nominated: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
