About the Film

Master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock directed this 1940 psychological thriller starring Laurence Olivier as wealthy widower Maxim de Winter and Joan Fontaine as his second wife, whose first name is never uttered.

As the second Mrs. de Winter attempts to adjust to her new life and find her place at Manderley, her husband’s large mansion and estate, she feels as though she is falling short of her husband’s first wife, Rebecca. The housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), was a close confidant to Rebecca and has kept her bedroom as it was before she died.

Mrs. de Winter yearns to learn more about her predecessor, whom the staff seems to hold in such high regard, but her husband refuses to speak about his first wife—or the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death.

What really happened to Rebecca on that stormy night? This chilling thriller will keep you guessing until the end!
