About the Film
He may not have wanted the job, but he was the right man for it. Sidney Poitier stars as Mr. Thackeray, an engineer-turned-high school teacher in South London at the height of the swinging ‘60s.
To Sir, with Love is a heartwarming coming-of-age story about a group of tough kids and the teacher determined to turn them into adults. Thackeray struggles to tame his class of disadvantaged teenagers but eventually manages to earn their trust and loyalty by treating them like the adults they are becoming.
Tackling issues of race and British class consciousness, the film quietly but adeptly navigates complex societal issues with respect and plenty of heart.
Also starring Judy Geeson as a schoolgirl with a crush on her handsome and well-mannered mentor, and the popular 1960s songstress Lulu (whose theme song would become a chart-topping hit), To Sir, with Love is a sentimental love letter to teachers everywhere—and a delightful time capsule of Swinging London in its heyday.
