Hung Sa Dahn faces imminent demolition as part of a redevelopment by new owner Tripalink. Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) and the Conservancy have partnered to nominate this rare and historically significant property as a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM).

The property at 3421-3423 South Catalina Street is considered by historians and historic preservationists to be the most significant unprotected Korean American heritage property in Los Angeles. 3421 South Catalina Street has been identified in SurveyLA’s Korean American Historic Context Statement as eligible for listing as a local landmark for its association as the longtime headquarters of Hung Sa Dahn, a significant Korean American civic organization in Los Angeles. 

The property meets “Historic-Cultural Monument Criteria 1” as it exemplifies significant contributions to the broad cultural, economic, or social history of the nation, state, city, or community. The site at 3421-3423 South Catalina Street is exemplary as a rare and enduring Korean American institutional property in Los Angeles. 3421-3423 South Catalina Street was the location from which Hung Sa Dahn operated from 1929 to 1979, which is the period of significance for the property. The buildings are extant, intact, and rare examples of early institutional properties associated with Korean American immigration, settlement, and development in Los Angeles.

The property also meets “Historic-Cultural Monument Criteria 2,” for its direct association with the life of historic personage, Dosan Ahn Chang Ho, a singularly important figure in Korean American history at the local, state, and national level, and in modern Korean history more broadly. Although Ahn was imprisoned abroad in Korea at the time of Hung Sa Dahn’s acquisition of the property in 1936 and died two years later before he could return home to Los Angeles, he and his teachings are integral to the organization’s existence over its 108-year history, including its period of significance at 3421-3423 South Catalina Street. Furthermore, the building’s acquisition was facilitated through his direct efforts and served as the first and only standalone headquarters of Hung Sa Dahn in Los Angeles.

이 건물은 역사적인 인물인 도산 안창호 선생과 직접 연관되어 있기 때문에 “사적지 자격 기준 2”도 충족시킨다. 도산 안창호 선생은 지역, 주, 국가적으로 재미 한인 역사에 각별히 중요한 인물일 뿐만 아니라 현대 한국역사에서도 중요한 분이다. 의 가르침이 3421-3423 South Catalina Street에서 보낸 중요한 시간을 포함해 이 단체의 106년 역사에 필수적인 부분이다. 뿐만 아니라 이 건물의 매입은 도산 안창호 선생의 직접적인 노력으로 가능했으며 흥사단이 엘에이내에 처음으로 독자적으로 소유했던 흥사단 본부 건물이다.
