People + Places: A Book List for Kids
The Los Angeles Conservancy's People + Places kids' book list and Storytime for Kids include stories about places, architecture, and preservation. These books are appropriate for grades 1-5 and provide a great introduction to the built environment and why saving places matters.
Teachers and parents can use the accompanying Reading Guides to go deeper into the topics and themes each story explores. Each Reading Guide contains discussion questions to elicit feedback, vocabulary words for better comprehension, and activities to further learning. All books are available at the Los Angeles Public Library.
Or, with libraries closed due to Covid-19, consider purchasing books at your local legacy bookstore! Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, Book Soup in West Hollywood, and Chevalier’s Books in Larchmont Village carry these titles and are taking online orders.
Do you know of a great kid's book about historic preservation or related topics? Email your suggestion to Sana Ahmed, Education Specialist, at sahmed@laconservancy.org.
