El Monte does not currently have a historic preservation ordinance.

The lack of any historic preservation policies prevents El Monte from offering protection to privately owned, historic resources. However, the City’s 2011 General Plan update incorporates a new Cultural Resources Element that was envisioned to serve as a guiding document that embodies how El Monte will protect and preserve its cultural heritage. “Preservation of Heritage” is one outlined method, which contains reference to preserving, enhancing, and renewing any remaining buildings of historic significance.
