Overview

A 42-story mixed-use tower has been proposed in the heart of the Miracle Mile Historic District, which was first determined eligible to the National Register in 1983. The district contains some of the examples of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings in the city. The proposed project would demolish two existing contributors to the district, the Santa Inez Co. the A&P Food Palace, and would preserve only the facade of a third, the Sontag Drug Building.

Our Position

The Conservancy believes that the project as proposed would leave a large hole in the eligible Miracle Mile Historic District and demolish three contributing properties, materially impairing the district as a whole. We maintain the Sontag Drug Building should be preserved in its entirety, and the facades of the two other buildings should be integrated into the new development. This would maintain the integrity of the district and its Art Deco streetscape, while still allowing for new housing to be built at this transit-adjacent site.
