About this Event
The Los Angeles Conservancy is proud to launch a major community initiative to document and celebrate Altadena’s historic places. Through a new Historic Resources Survey and Historic Context Statement, this effort will map the buildings, cultural landmarks, and stories that define Altadena’s history and identity.
Together, these tools will create a fuller understanding of the community’s past—helping to guide rebuilding, planning, and preservation efforts in the wake of the 2025 Eaton Fire. The project will identify historic resources across Altadena and outline their historical and cultural significance, ensuring that the town’s growth honors its unique heritage.
Working in close partnership with local organizations, residents, and community leaders, the project team will ensure that Altadena’s diverse voices shape the process and outcomes. The survey will also support informed land use and planning decisions and rebuilding, while helping property owners access potential preservation incentives and designations, including eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register, and Los Angeles County landmarks.
As this work unfolds, it will uncover new opportunities for residents to activate and share their local heritage—through neighborhood walking tours, public art, storytelling projects, and more.
In early 2025, immediately after the fires, the Conservancy began the work to document Altadena’s heritage through a coordinated effort with Architectural Resources Group (ARG), the World Monuments Fund, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and community organizations, compiling existing heritage data about Altadena into a freely accessible Geographic Information System (GIS) map.
