An Interview with Russell Kehl
By Liz Leshin
Los Angeles Conservancy Board member Russell Kehl, president and part owner of Structural Focus, recently checked in with Liz Leshin, the Conservancy’s director of development, about his involvement with the Conservancy and why membership matters to him.
LIZ LESHIN: Your structural engineering services firm Structural Focus has been an L.A. Conservancy member since its founding in 2001, and a Corporate Cornerstone member since 2009. What motivated the company to join at that level, and what do you get out of the membership?
RUSSELL KEHL: The Los Angeles Conservancy is a great resource in Southern California for staying informed about threats and successes to the historic resources we are passionate about. Our Corporate Cornerstone membership allows us to stay connected with our industry partners who also care about historic preservation. We all have wonderful stories about successful preservation projects we have worked on, and sharing those stories is a great motivator for continuing the cause.
LL: One of the ways you support the Conservancy is by giving gifts of membership to the organization. Why did you choose to do that, and why do you think it’s a good way for others to give support?
RK: Through my membership in the Conservancy, I have had the opportunity to attend wonderful events and see amazing historic buildings and places. Every time I get that opportunity, I think about my family and friends who would enjoy the opportunity as much as I do. From Last Remaining Seats to touring Harbor House to the annual Conservancy Preservation Awards, there is something for everyone! Gifting a membership is my way of inviting my family and friends to experience the things that I am passionate about.
LL: How much work does Structural Focus do in preservation, and how has your work in historic preservation informed your support of the Conservancy?
RK: Historic preservation is one of our main market sectors. We have a good reputation for working to save historic resources, and our experience opens doors for opportunities to work on the best preservation projects in Southern California. For me personally, having worked on several preservation projects in my career provides context for me to advocate for historic preservation through my role on the Conservancy Board.
LL: What’s your hope for the Conservancy and L.A. historic preservation in the future?
RK: Saving historic resources is something we owe to future generations. I’m hopeful the Conservancy will continue to have success accomplishing that. I want my kids and their kids to experience the amazing places I have been fortunate enough to learn about and see.
