A cookie is a small amount of data, often including an anonymous unique identifier sent to your browser from a website’s computers and stored on your computer’s hard drive. We use cookies to provide a positive and personalized user experience and analyze our site’s behavior for continued improvement.
Our persistent and session ID cookies are used to identify unique visitors to our sites and to provide you with easy access to your account data and information. If you set your browser to reject cookies, you must re-enter information when interacting with the Conservancy website.
Some of the third-party features the Conservancy uses, such as Google Analytics (for website analysis) and ActOn (for mass emails), do use cookies. We do not have access to or control over these cookies.
However, the type of Google Analytics we use (Universal Analytics) minimizes cookie storage and supports data collection without cookies. Visit Google’s website for more information about security and privacy in Universal Analytics and/or how to opt out of Google Analytics.
Our website employs a software technology called clear gifs (a.k.a. Web Beacons), which help us better manage content on our site by informing us what content is effective. Clear gifs are tiny graphics with a unique identifier, similar in function to cookies, and are used to track the online movements of website users.
In contrast to cookies, which are stored on a user’s computer hard drive, clear gifs are embedded invisibly on web pages and are about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. We may tie the information gathered by clear gifs to your personally identifiable information.
The Conservancy uses Google Universal Analytics to track analyze traffic on our website. We use it to track general trends such as how many people visit the site, how long they stay on the site, what types of content are most and least popular, and whether people leave the site during a certain phase of a transaction, which can indicate technical problems.
We use this information strictly to gauge the effectiveness of the website, troubleshoot technical issues, and plan future improvements. You can visit Google’s website to learn more about security and privacy in Universal Analytics.
In 2015, we implemented the Google Analytics Advertising Feature for Demographics and Interest Reports. This feature collects information about users’ age, gender, and interests. We use this information strictly to better understand our constituents and what types of content and service they might find most helpful. You can opt out of these features and all Google Analytics tracking by installing Google’s Opt-Out Browser Add-On.
As is true of most websites, the Conservancy’s site gathers certain information automatically and stores it in log files. This information includes internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, operating system, date/time stamp, and clickstream data.
We use this information, which does not identify individual users, to analyze trends, to administer the site, to track users’ movements around the site and to gather demographic information about our user base as a whole.
We do link some of this automatically collected data to personally identifiable information. This allows us to deliver a better experience by reducing the amount of data that needs to be entered when filling out forms, downloading gated content, completing surveys, etc.
The Los Angeles Conservancy will not share your phone number or email address with anyone without your express consent. We reserve the right, however, to share such information with third parties as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena or similar legal process; and/or when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request.
While we do not share phone numbers or email addresses, the Conservancy does exchange mailing addresses of our members with like-minded organizations for marketing purposes. These list exchanges are for one time only, and the mailing lists are provided directly to fulfillment centers (not the organizations themselves).
If you would not like your mailing address shared with other organizations, you can have your information removed from such list exchanges by submitting a written request to member@laconservancy.org or the Los Angeles Conservancy, 523 West Sixth Street, Suite 826, Los Angeles, CA 90014, Attn: List Exchanges.
All information provided to the Los Angeles Conservancy is transmitted using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption. SSL is a proven coding system that lets your browser automatically encrypt, or scramble, data before you send it to us.
When you create an account on the Conservancy website, you receive a unique user name and password that is required to access your account. It is your responsibility to protect the security of your login information.
As mandated by credit-card companies and our merchant account provider, the Conservancy is certified by the Payment Card Industry (PCI), which helps protect us and you against payment card theft and fraud.
We also protect account information by placing it on a secure portion of our website that is only accessible by certain authorized employees of the Los Angeles Conservancy.
Unfortunately, however, no data transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of such information.
When you register for an account on the Conservancy website, we make good faith efforts to provide you with access to your personal information to allow you to correct this data if it is inaccurate or to delete such data at your request if it is not otherwise required to be retained by law or for legitimate business purposes. You may update your account information by logging into your account.
When requests come to the Conservancy concerning personal information, we ask individual users to identify themselves and the information requested to be accessed, corrected, or removed before processing such requests. We may decline to process requests that are unreasonably repetitive or systematic, require disproportionate technical effort, jeopardize the privacy of others, or would be extremely impractical (for instance, requests concerning information residing on backup tapes), or for which access is not otherwise required. In any case, where we provide information access and correction, we perform this service free of charge, except if doing so would require a disproportionate effort.
