Avalon does not currently have a historic preservation ordinance.

This one square mile city on Santa Catalina Island, the second smallest municipality in Los Angeles County, updated its General Plan in 2013 and prepared a citywide survey of historic resources as part of the Cultural Resources Element.  This citywide survey marks an important step for Avalon that will aid in future preservation planning for historically significant sites throughout the community.

We don't know of any community-specific resources for local preservation in Avalon, other than the Preliminary Cultural Resource Management Plan document linked at left. If you do, please let us know.

For general information about using the California Environmental Quality Act to protect historic places in your community, you can download our Guide to CEQA in English or Spanish.

For other resources, including a model ordinance and glossary of basic preservation terms, please see the Resources tab on our Report Card microsite.
