Join the L.A. Conservancy for an exclusive walking tour of Harbor House, a five-story Mediterranean Revival landmark overlooking the Port of Los Angeles. Built in 1926 as the Army and Navy YMCA to serve San Pedro’s military personnel, it was heavily used during World War II before serving as a longtime transitional housing facility.  Designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1982, it stands as an important piece of the city’s architectural and social history.

Recently, through adaptive reuse, Harbor House has undergone an exciting transformation to become a mixed-used space with 100 residential units. On the tour, you’ll see restored original features like the grand lobby’s painted ceiling beams and the basketball gymnasium with its suspended running track, as well as reimagined areas, such as several of the new apartments and future plans for a restaurant and pool.

The tour offers a firsthand look at how adaptive reuse can thoughtfully modernize historic structures to meet the current demand for housing while simultaneously revitalizing neighborhoods and preserving their historic legacies.
