Volunteering

Volunteers Make Everything Happen!

The Conservancy relies heavily on the support of its volunteers, who are essential to the success of both educational programs and advocacy efforts. Many of our projects depend on the continued involvement of volunteers in a variety of different activities. Diverse options are available to anyone wishing to give his or her time and talent to the Conservancy.

Historic Theatres Committee (HTC)

HTC promotes the preservation of historic theatres in Greater Los Angeles as significant and viable community, cultural, and architectural resources. Activities include researching local theatres, conducting oral histories, and other theatre-related endeavors.

To get involved, learn more by visiting the HTC section of our website, and attend one of their quarterly meetings.

To receive meeting notices, e-mail lachistorictheatres@gmail.com to join the HTC e-mail list.

Last Remaining Seats Committee (LRSCOM)

A subcommittee of HTC, LRSCOM plans the Conservancy’s annual Last Remaining Seats series, which presents classic films and live entertainment in historic theatres during the summer.

To get involved, learn more by visiting the LRSCOM section of the HTC page on our website, and attend one of their regular meetings (held monthly from September through May).

To receive meeting notices, e-mail Tracy Fink to join the LRSCOM e-mail list.

Modern Committee (ModCom)

ModCom was formed in 1984 in response to the unabated destruction of post-World War II architecture in Greater Los Angeles. Since then, the committee has expanded to include all 20th-century architecture and related fields. The committee holds events and helps to identify and protect significant Modern buildings.

To get involved, learn more by visiting the ModCom website, and attend one of their monthly meetings.

To receive meeting notices, join the ModCom e-mail list (check the ‘Modern Committee’ box on the sign-up form).

Walking Tour Docent Program

The Conservancy's popular architectural walking tours are offered year-round, led by a large corps of volunteer docents. Docent training classes are held every 12-18 months and are by invitation.

If you are interested in becoming a walking tour docent, please contact Annie Laskey at alaskey@laconservancy.org or (213) 430-4209.

Special Tours and Events

In addition to our regular walking tours, the Conservancy offers one-time-only tours twice a year. These tours require help with docenting (speaking roles) and logistics (check in, line management, etc.). Volunteering for special tours requires brief training (and learning a script if you’re a docent) but is less of a commitment than our Walking Tour Docent Program. We also need volunteers to help with logistics during our Last Remaining Seats summer film series.

To receive notices of upcoming opportunities, please complete our Special Tours and Events Volunteer form.

Office Volunteers

We occasionally need help with projects in the office.

We don't need help at the moment, but when we do, we will post a signup form on this page.

Advocacy

To help with specific Conservancy advocacy issues, sign up for our Action Alert e-mails (check ‘Preservation Action Alerts’ on the sign-up form).

If you are interested in more substantial advocacy work, we occasionally need help with specific projects.

Photography

Professional photographer Andrew Hara donated this photo of the Century Plaza Hotel to aid in our advocacy efforts.

Compelling images are essential to our success. If you’d like to donate your photographic or videographic services, please contact Cindy Olnick at colnick@laconservancy.org or (213) 430-4214.

Wiltern Theater
Wilshire Boulevard at Western Avenue

The Wiltern Theater and the office tower above it, the Pellissier Building, is an impressive green terra cotta structure proudly demonstrating the beauty and opulence of the Art Deco style. The building was threatened with demolition in the late 1970s, but was saved through community organizing by the Conservancy and a last-ditch rescue and renovation by developer Wayne Ratkovich. Today, the Wiltern Theater thrives with popular live entertainment acts, and the building also houses the famous Atlas Bar and Grill, a popular restaurant and nightclub.
